Judges Comments
Congratulations, Tom on being the overall winner for the photo competition in 2010 for Kokoda Spirit. The sunset you captured at Ioribaiwa Village when you trekked in April is simply stunning. Words are superfluous when such a scene of beauty is being viewed. Thank you for sharing this with us all Tom.

NovemBER 2010 Winner
The winner of the November competition is Alan McMahon who trekked with Kokoda Spirit 22 – 29 September, from Owers’ Corner to Kokoda.
JUDGES COMMENTS:
“Oh the feeling of freedom of grateful feet being out of those boots! No doubt the owners were sitting around reflecting on the day, what would be encountered next and enjoying being ‘bootless’ for awhile. This photo captures perfectly one of the most important items a trekker can have when tackling the Track.
Congratulations Alan, fabulous picture that evokes so many feelings and memories of trekking".

OCTOBER 2010 Winner
The winner of the October photo competition is Robert Ceccato who trekked with Kokoda Spirit 28 July – 5th August.
JUDGES COMMENTS:
“Congratulations Robert, your photo is striking.
As trekkers we concentrate so hard on where we are walking we forget the beauty around us and as this photo shows us so stunningly, the beauty above us. The Track is often thought of as harsh yet this picture captures a perfect specimen of Mother Nature, fragile yet strong, reaching for sun. Love this Robert."

September 2010 Winner
The winner of the September photo competition is Mertsi Saari who trekked with Kokoda Spirit 28 August – 5th September.
JUDGES COMMENTS:
“Congratulations Mertsi, your photo of a tree root covered hill is a cracker.
The picture depicts so well the many uphill, (or downhill), climbs where the tree roots were either your friend or foe. Wasn’t it great when your foot fitted perfectly between the crisscross of roots but didn’t the muscles groan with the many twists and turns around them!
I really love the angle you captured and seeing some trekkers towards the top. This picture depicts so well the terrain that is such an integral part of trekking Kokoda. Thanks Mertsi, great shot.”

AUGUST 2010 Winner
The winner of the August photo competition is Dianne Galea who trekked with Kokoda Spirit 28 July – 5th August.
JUDGES COMMENTS:
“Dianne, congratulations ‘The Hands of a Fuzzy Wuzzy’ is the August photo winner. The photo is breathtaking in its simplicity and beauty.
I wonder how many diggers these hands comforted and helped during the Kokoda Campaign? We owe so much to these special men, who themselves were only young boys at the time, without them many of our men would not have made the journey home.
These hands, these beautiful hands, linked to a caring heart.
Thank you Dianne for capturing such a strong and symbolic presence.”

JULY 2010 Winner
The winner of the July photo competition is Christine Andriessen who trekked with Kokoda Spirit 28 June – 7 July
JUDGES COMMENTS
“Congratulations Christine, this is a fantastic photo. It really brought a smile to my face and it proves everyone gets tired on the Kokoda Track! Made me wonder how many trekkers over the years have slept as peacefully as this little fellow!
One of the many joys (yes fellow trekkers there is joy amidst the seemingly never-ending ups and downs) are the village children, their beautiful smiles that light up their faces & the excitement in their eyes when a new group of hikers come through their village. Bet this young man was upset when he woke to find out he had slept through a visit!!
Well done Christine, beauty on the Kokoda Track is everywhere.”

June 2010 Winner
Our winner was Brett Jordan, who trekked with Kokoda Spirit 3 – 11 April.
Judges comments
"Congratulations Brett, your photo of a river crossing is beautiful. It depicts the power of the river and mother nature. Walking the track and hearing the sound of river crossings becoming louder as you climb down, down, down is both a welcome sound and one of some trepidation.
But if the log crossing is as wide as the one in this picture a sense of relief is experienced! And how appreciated are those rivers along the way, for drinking water, bathing, washing gear, cooling off and most of all for their stunning beauty."

May 2010 Winner
Our winner was Peter Sergeant, who trekked with Kokoda Spirit 10 – 19 May. The photo taken at Isurava Memorial.
Judges comments
This picture of Peter with his porter (Aaron) captures the spirit of Kokoda.
Taken in front of the ‘MATESHIP’ pillar, this photo speaks a thousand words. The high regard held by the diggers for the ‘Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels’ is legendary & today friendships continue to be made by trekkers grateful for the care & support of the locals. Sharing time with your porter, guides, cooks, village people along the track adds enormously to the Kokoda experience.
Terrific photo Peter at one of the most moving locations along the track...

Judges comments
Thank you to those who sent in photos for the inaugural ‘Kokoda Spirit’ Photo Competition. Being the judge of entries of such high quality is not an easy thing but as is said, there can only be one winner.
Congratulations Tom. Your entry of a sunset at Ioribaiwa was spectacular. I am sure all who see it will agree what a breathtaking image Tom captured & that a scene such as this reminds us of the startling beauty of Mother Nature. Thank you Tom...
