Awareness by Walking Kokoda 2011
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are a lifelong developmental disability that can impact an individual in every aspect of their life. Individuals with an ASD may have difficulties in multiple areas of their life including relating to others and social interaction, communication and language difficulties, repetitive behaviours and a need for sameness. These difficulties interfere with their lives to a great extent and make it extremely hard for an individual with an ASD to understand the people around them and the world we live in.

ASD affects 1 in every 160 individuals in Australia to date. The exact causes of ASD are unknown and at present there is no known cure. In Victoria, the first port of call when an individual is diagnosed with an ASD is Autism Victoria. It is therefore imperative that Autism Victoria has up to date resources and accurate information to share with the ASD community.
In October 2011, a group of mothers, fathers, friends, family members, and individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder will embark on the challenge of a lifetime, the Kokoda Trail. This incredible journey aims to raise awareness of ASDs and funds to support the ASD community. The dedicated group will battle the challenging terrain and weather conditions over a ten day walk as they trek 96 kilometres across Papua New Guinea.
All money raised by the team taking charge of this adventure will be donated to Autism Victoria’s 1000 Book Campaign. The Campaign aims to add 1000 resources to the Autism Victoria Library, with a major goal to provide the largest ASD-specific library in the Southern Hemisphere. The money raised by the Kokoda Trekkers will help Autism Victoria reach this goal.
