Trek Overview

Rising to 4,509 metresMount Wilhelm is the highest peak in Papua New Guinea and one of the great climbing challenges in the region.

The journey begins in the remote Highlands, moving through subsistence villages and dense rainforest before climbing into moss forest, alpine grasslands, and exposed high-altitude terrain.

Each day brings a noticeable shift — in landscape, temperature, and intensity.

Summit day starts in darkness. Under headlamps, you climb steadily toward the peak, reaching the summit at sunrise. From the top, the Highlands unfold in every direction — a moment that makes the effort, fatigue, and early start more than worthwhile.

This climb demands physical preparation, mental resilience, and teamwork. It strips away distractions and comfort, leaving you with a raw, honest mountain experience — and a deep sense of accomplishment few ever earn.

Day 01

Port Moresby to Mt Hagen | Transfer to Betty’s Lodge

(Altitude: approx. 2,820m)

Depart your Port Moresby hotel early for your flight to Mt Hagen. On arrival, we begin a scenic drive of approximately five hours into the remote Highlands, travelling through local villages and rugged mountain landscapes to reach Betty’s Lodge, our base for the first stage of the climb.

After arrival, there is time to settle in, enjoy dinner, and rest. An early night is recommended as we begin acclimatising to the altitude.

Accommodation: Betty’s Lodge
Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 02

Acclimatisation Trek | Lakes & Base Camp Approach

(Highest point: approx. 3,580m)

Today is dedicated to acclimatisation, a critical part of safely climbing Mount Wilhelm. After breakfast, we set out on a trek through the lakes region, gradually gaining altitude and allowing the body to adjust.

The walk takes approximately five hours, reaching up toward Base Camp (3,580m) before returning to the lodge. This day is about pacing, hydration, and listening to your body.

In the evening, we conduct a pre-trek briefing, check gear, and prepare for the climb ahead before another early night.

Accommodation: Betty’s Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 03

Trek to Base Camp

(Base Camp: 3,580m)

Today we begin the climb in earnest, trekking steadily from Betty’s Lodge up to Base Camp. The pace is intentionally slow to support acclimatisation, with regular breaks to hydrate and recover.

Conditions become cooler and more alpine as we gain altitude. Base Camp accommodation is very basic, so it’s essential that wet weather gear and a suitable sleeping bag are on hand.

The afternoon is spent resting, hydrating, and preparing for the summit push.

Accommodation: Base Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 04

Summit Day | Mount Wilhelm (4,509m)

Summit day begins just after midnight, with a light breakfast before setting off around 1:00am, walking by headlamp under the stars.

This is a long and demanding day, with total walking time of up to 15 hours. The climb from Base Camp to the summit is approximately 5.3km, timed to reach the peak around sunrise.

After standing on the highest point in Papua New Guinea, taking in the views and the moment, we begin our descent. We stop back at Base Camp for a hot drink before continuing all the way down to Betty’s Lodge for a well-earned meal and rest.

Accommodation: Betty’s Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5 – Return to Mt Hagen | Fly to Port Moresby
