The Kokoda Campaign was fought across far more than the famous Kokoda Track. From the first clashes with the advancing Japanese near Awala, through the desperate fighting across the Owen Stanley Range, to the final and extraordinarily bloody battles on the Northern Beaches, this was a campaign fought across some of the most rugged and remote country in Papua New Guinea.
Our Kokoda from the Air – Helicopter & Northern Beaches Battlefield Tour has been designed to bring that remarkable story together in one unique historical journey.
Beginning in Port Moresby, we visit Bomana War Cemetery, McDonald’s Corner and Owers’ Corner before taking to the air for a spectacular helicopter flight across the Owen Stanley Range to historic Myola.
Hidden high in the mountains, Myola played a vital role as a wartime supply and staging area during the Kokoda Campaign.
From Myola we continue by helicopter to Kokoda, where we explore the battlefield, memorials and museum and stand beneath the famous Kokoda Track arches.
We then follow the campaign north towards the coast, visiting Gorari and Awala before continuing through Popondetta to the wartime airfields around Girua and Dobodura.
Our journey culminates on the Northern Beaches at Buna and Sanananda, where Australian and Allied troops fought some of the most savage battles of the Pacific War.
Travelling by road, helicopter, foot and traditional banana boat, this is far more than a sightseeing tour. It is an immersive journey through the Kokoda Campaign – land and air.

Day 01
Arrive Port Moresby
Arrive in Port Moresby and transfer to The Stanley Hotel.
At 5:00 pm we meet for a tour briefing and introduction to the journey ahead.
Overnight: The Stanley Hotel, Port Moresby.
Day 02
Port Moresby, Bomana & Owers’ Corner
Today we begin the Kokoda story in and around Port Moresby.
Visit Bomana War Cemetery, the final resting place of thousands of Commonwealth servicemen who died during the fighting in Papua and New Guinea.
Travel towards the foothills of the Owen Stanley Range, stopping at historic McDonald’s Corner before continuing to Owers’ Corner – the southern gateway to the Kokoda Track.
Explore Owers’ Corner and its wartime significance before returning via the Sogeri Plateau for lunch.
This afternoon we tour Port Moresby and gain an insight into Papua New Guinea’s capital before returning to our hotel.

Day 03
Myola & Kokoda by Helicopter
Depart Port Moresby by helicopter for a spectacular flight across the Owen Stanley Range to Myola.
We spend time on the ground at Myola discussing its crucial role as a wartime supply and staging area during the Kokoda Campaign.
Continue by helicopter to Kokoda.
This afternoon we explore the Kokoda Plateau battlefields and memorials, visit the Kokoda Museum and walk to the famous Kokoda Track arches for photographs.
Overnight: Kokoda Daito Compound.
Day 04
Kokoda to Buna
Depart Kokoda and begin our journey towards the Northern Beaches, visiting the battle sites of Gorari and Awala.
Awala was the scene of the first clash between Australian and Japanese ground forces during the Kokoda Campaign in July 1942.
Continue to Popondetta to collect supplies and visit the local military display.
On the journey towards Buna we visit the wartime airfield areas around Girua and Dobodura, once a major Allied air complex. Remnants of the airstrips and the huge horseshoe-shaped aircraft revetments can still be seen.
Continue through the village to the beach and make the short journey to our Buna guest house, where we are welcomed with traditional dancing and refreshments.
This afternoon we explore the Buna area before enjoying a traditional feast and a relaxing evening beside the sea.

Day 05
Sanananda & Huggins Corner
After breakfast we travel by banana boat from Buna to Sanananda.
From Sanananda we walk to historic Huggins Corner, an area associated with fierce fighting during the Northern Beaches campaign.
After exploring the battlefield and hearing the stories of the men who fought here, we return to Buna and then travel by road to Popondetta.
Overnight: Comfort Inn, Popondetta.
Day 06
Popondetta to Port Moresby
After breakfast transfer to Popondetta Airport for our flight back to Port Moresby.
On arrival, transfer to The Stanley Hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 07
Depart Port Moresby
After breakfast, transfer arrangements can be made for your onward journey and flight home.
Tour concludes.
