Taste Of Kokoda – Day Tour

For visitors to Papua New Guinea who may not have the time to complete a full Kokoda crossing, our Taste of Kokoda Day Tour provides an opportunity to experience part of the legendary Kokoda Track and discover the remarkable history of the Kokoda Campaign.

Beginning in Port Moresby, we travel through the foothills of the Owen Stanley Range to McDonald’s Corner, where soldiers of the 39th Battalion began their historic journey towards Kokoda in 1942.

From there we continue to Owers’ Corner, the southern gateway to the Kokoda Track.

Standing high above the Goldie River valley, we conduct a historical briefing overlooking the rugged country through which Australian soldiers advanced and withdrew during the Kokoda Campaign.

Walk Owers’ Corner to Imita Ridge

From Owers’ Corner we descend steeply towards the Goldie River, experiencing firsthand the terrain that has made the Kokoda Track legendary.

After crossing the Goldie River, we continue through the tropical rainforest to Goodwater campsite, where we pause for morning tea before beginning the climb towards Imita Ridge.

Imita Ridge holds an important place in the history of the Kokoda Campaign. During the Australian withdrawal in September 1942, the ridge became the final defensive position protecting the approaches to Port Moresby. It was here that the Australians were ordered that there would be no further withdrawal.

After exploring the ridge and discussing the events that unfolded here, we retrace our steps to Goodwater for lunch.

We then cross the Goldie River once more and tackle the final climb back to Owers’ Corner.

Reaching Owers’ Corner provides an opportunity to celebrate the day’s achievement, take photographs and reflect on the terrain and history you have just experienced.

Bomana War Cemetery

On our return journey to Port Moresby, we visit Bomana War Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the Pacific.

Here we take time to pay our respects to the Australians and other Commonwealth servicemen who lost their lives during the fighting in Papua and New Guinea.

We then return to your Port Moresby hotel at approximately 6.00pm, completing an unforgettable introduction to Kokoda.
