Darren Savickas

Darren has been guiding on the Kokoda Track since 2009 and has completed 24 treks to date, with 100% of his trekkers successfully reaching the finish. Over the years, he has guided a wide range of groups, including elite athletes, corporate executives, current and former ADF members, and trekkers aged from 12 to 76.

A retired Senior Sergeant with the Victorian Police Force, Darren brings decades of leadership, discipline, and calm decision-making into every trek. His background in policing supports a steady, professional approach on the Track, particularly when conditions are demanding and sound judgement matters most.

Darren first walked Kokoda in 2009 and was both humbled and inspired by the experience and by the significance of the Kokoda Campaign in Australia’s history. That first trek sparked a long-term commitment to guiding others along the Track and supporting them through one of the country’s most challenging and meaningful journeys.

He regards Kokoda as a uniquely Australian experience and a powerful physical and mental challenge. Darren particularly enjoys guiding people who have committed themselves fully to the journey and watching confidence, resilience, and teamwork grow day by day.

For Darren, it is an honour to walk in the footsteps of the diggers and to help trekkers better understand the courage, endurance, mateship, and sacrifice shown by those who fought along the Track.

Darren’s Guide Insights

Trekking & Guiding Background
In addition to his Kokoda experience, Darren holds Certificate III and IV in Fitness, is a qualified CrossFit coach, and has a degree in Public Sector Leadership and Management. He has completed treks across Australia including the Great Ocean Walk, the Grampians, the Victorian High Country, and Mount Kosciuszko, and in 2025 trekked to Everest Base Camp in Nepal.

Journey to Kokoda Spirit
Darren was drawn to Kokoda Spirit for its professionalism, organisation, and genuine commitment to its people in both Australia and Papua New Guinea. He strongly values the way Kokoda Spirit supports local communities and the PNG guides and porters who are integral to the Kokoda experience.

Connection to Kokoda History
While Darren does not have a direct family connection to the Kokoda Campaign, he is deeply humbled and inspired by those who fought there. He believes that once you walk the Track and understand its history, it is impossible not to feel a profound sense of gratitude and emotion for the sacrifice made.

A Moment That Never Gets Old
Services conducted at significant sites such as Isurava and Brigade Hill never lose their impact. Walking through the arches as a team is always bittersweet — the journey is over, yet part of you wants just a little more. Darren also values the uniquely Australian banter that carries groups through tough days.

Which Direction Is “Easier”?
Kokoda to Owers’ Corner offers an easier start and a harder finish, while the reverse presents the opposite challenge. Darren feels Kokoda to Owers’ Corner provides the clearest understanding of the campaign, as it follows the path from where it began.

Most Meaningful Places on the Track
Isurava holds special meaning and feels like sacred ground once its history is understood. Off the Track, Bomana War Cemetery is the most meaningful place for Darren.

Favourite Village
Hoi — sitting in the cool stream surrounded by butterflies is unforgettable.

Best Meal on the Track
Vegetable curry made with fresh village produce, with donuts a very close second.

One Item He’d Never Trek Without
Well-fitted, well-worn boots — your feet are the tools that get the job done.

What Makes a Great Kokoda Trekker
Preparation builds resilience. Resilience allows you to adapt and keep moving forward. Add a sense of humour and the ability to laugh at yourself, and you become almost bulletproof.
